ABOUT THE ICON

Our icon will be similar to the historic Byzantine icon pictured above: an image of Virgin holding Christ Emmanuel, with the two angels in the upper area holding the instruments of Christ’s Passion: the cross and the spear. The Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic churches know this image as the Virgin of the Passion. A variant of this icon is known in the Roman Catholic Church as Our Lady of Perpetual Help. We recommend that this icon be painted on a standard size 13”x17” icon board, but you may adjust the drawing to fit any size board you wish. If you choose to work on a larger board, please keep in mind that in this workshop two students share an 8-foot table, so your painting area is 4 feet.

PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS

You must purchase your own board and complete the preliminary preparation before coming to the workshop: transfer the drawing, gild the halos (and optional background or kovcheg if you wish), and do the line work. The class will begin with painting the roskrish. Packets with the drawing and the preparation instructions will be mailed soon after the April 15 registration deadline so that you will have adequate time to complete the preparations. Two icon board makers that we recommend are Daniel Cervantes ([email protected]) and St. John’s Workshop (www.stjohnsworkshop.com). St. Elizabeth Icon Studio ([email protected]) has a limited supply of flat 13x17 boards.
